Q WITHOUT U: RESCUE WORDS
The Q is Scrabble's most feared tile. It's worth 10 points, but only if you can play it — and the schoolbook rule that Q is always followed by U leaves you hostage to drawing one of just four U tiles. Except the rule isn't true. English has borrowed a healthy set of Q-without-U words from Arabic, Chinese, Persian and Hebrew, and they're all a stranded Q needs.
THE LIFESAVER: QI
If you learn one word from this page, make it QI — the Chinese concept of life energy (as in tai chi and qigong). Two letters, valid in Collins Scrabble Words, and playable in two directions at once. Drop the Q on a double or triple letter square so it scores both ways and a humble two-tile play regularly clears 30 points.
THE CORE LIST
| Word | Meaning |
|---|---|
| QI | Life force in Chinese philosophy |
| QAT | A leaf chewed as a stimulant (also spelt KHAT) |
| QADI | A judge in Islamic law (also QAID: a North African chieftain) |
| QOPH | A letter of the Hebrew alphabet |
| QANAT | An underground irrigation channel |
| QIBLA | The direction of Mecca, faced during prayer |
| NIQAB | A face veil worn by some Muslim women |
| FAQIR | A religious ascetic (also spelt FAKIR) |
| TRANQ | Informal: a tranquilliser |
| SHEQEL | Israeli currency unit (also spelt SHEKEL) |
| QIGONG | A Chinese system of breathing exercises |
Most of these have useful plurals too — QIS, QATS, QADIS, QANATS, NIQABS, TRANQS — which matters when you're hunting for a spare S hook.
WHEN TO HOLD AND WHEN TO DUMP
- Early game: if you draw the Q with a U or an I, play it as soon as a decent scoring spot appears. Don't wait for perfection — a Q on your rack restricts every future draw.
- No vowels for it? Consider swapping tiles. Losing a turn hurts less than dragging a dead Q through five more draws.
- Endgame: an unplayed Q costs you 10 points and hands your opponent the same amount in most scoring variants. Getting rid of it is nearly always the priority in the final turns.
MEMORISE THEM THE EASY WAY
Group them by origin: the Arabic set (QADI, QAID, QANAT, QIBLA, NIQAB, FAQIR), the Hebrew set (QOPH, SHEQEL), the Chinese set (QI, QIGONG). Three tiny stories are easier to keep than twelve random spellings. Then test yourself: type Q plus a few vowels and consonants into our word unscrambler and see which rescue words you can find before the tool shows you.
